Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar has launched a new pilot project that will deport illegal immigrant to their respectives countries rather than serving time in prison. The minister stated in a press conference, “We have got more than one million people who are illegal in this country so I don’t think our prisons are big enough. When the economy is facing a global crisis, we must give priority to our people”. So to weed out the illegal overstayers from an estimated 2.2 million foreign laborers who are in Malaysia, this new system will see those arrested having their biometric details recorded and paying a small fine before deported.
