PKR rejects unity government
Opposition supremo leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced in Parliament yesterday after a meeting with the alliance’s three party leaders that Pakatan Rakyat rejects the idea of forming a unity government with Umno/Barisan Nasional.
Anwar was quoted, “The Pakatan Rakyat council of leaders reaffirms our rejection of the idea of forming a unity government with Umno/Barisan Nasional. Pakatan agrees to an open approach and is willing to hold discussions with the BN on issues of national interest. When the issue arose, I called Hadi, who was overseas, and he was consistent in his stand that there were no plans for Pas to leave PR.”
In recent weeks, the opposition alliance was in turmoil with PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang calling for a unity government, but has recently had a turn-around of decision, slamming UMNO for being “malicious” in wanting to divide the alliance.
Hadi gave a statement, “We have experienced our first crisis of confidence. But we have come together. This joint statement shows that we are committed to moving forward to show that we are different from BN. This is a slander to get us to fight among ourselves.”
Those attended the emergency meeting includes DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, vice-presidents Salahuddin Ayub and Datuk Mahfuz Omar, secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali and central committee member Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.
PAS deputy president Nasharuddin was not present in the meeting.
