Harakah of the hardline Parti Islam SeMalaysia and Voice of Justice of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s People’s Justice Party has been banned for three months by the Malaysian government. It was announced by Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar yesterday citing that both papers has published defamatory news. When asked for the specifics of the infraction, no detailed was given. The Malaysian government in response to the media of course has denied this is a political crackdown. Syed Hamid Albar was quoted as, “This action does not mean the government is curbing press freedom but to preserve peace and harmony in our multiracial society.” The Opposition have condemned the banning and calling the crackdown by PM-to-be Najib Razak as “unreasonable and undemocratic”. ![]()
