Malaysia Leader “Yoga Is Fine Without The Chant Mantras”

Harussani Zakaria from National Fatwa Council “Muslims cannot practice Yoga in its original form because it involves another religion,”

“Muslims can perform yoga” assures Malaysia’s leader, and added “if no chants of religious mantras was present”.

This was the official statement by the government after the conservative nation Islamic body, National Fatwa Council, banned the practice of Indian form of exercise.

The logic behind the National Fatwa Council ruling is that, yoga has elements of Hinduism and it could corrupt Muslims who are practising it.

Of course there was a backlash to this Fatwa ruling, where the public cries call for amendments in the ruling as plenty of Muslims voiced out, that their faith was still with Islam and they didn’t wavered all this while, despite practising yoga for years.

It even took Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi making a statement about it, “I wish to state that a physical regime with no elements of worship can continue, meaning, it is not banned”.

Now National Fatwa Council has another issue pending after saying that they frown upon tomboyism – or girls who acts and dress like boys.
