Anwar Wants Probe Into Detainee Death of Possible Police Abuse

Kugan Ananthan died while in police custody for questioning as he was brought in for a suspected car theft crime.

The 22 year old died last Tuesday on the 20th January 2008.

It is said Ananthan collapsed after he asked the police for a glass of water during questioning.

Police has given out an official post-mortem as fluid in his lungs as the cause of the death.

The family of the deceased Ananthan wasn’t satisfied with the post-mortem, so they stormed the mortuary, took photos and released it to the media, claiming it was police torture that killed their son.

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has made a statement to the media to call for an independent body to investigate the death of Kugan Ananthan.

“The repeat of such incidents will definitely erode the people’s confidence in the credibility of the police force as a security agency. To restore the people’s confidence, I demand an independent and transparent investigation body be formed to investigate the death of Kugan Ananthan. With the support of all fellow MPs, we will find ways to improve the police professionalism and to restore the people’s confidence in the security agency”.
