![]() Bagan Pinang by-electionPublished Sep 16th, 2009The Bagan Pinang Umno stronghold holds no fear for Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim as he believes that Pakatan Rakyat will emerge triumphant in that state constituency’s upcoming by-election.
The BN state assemblyman for Bagan Pinang in Negeri Sembilan, Azman Mohd. Noor, passed away on September 4, 2009 of a heart attack at the Seremban Specialist Centre, triggering the ninth by-election since 2008 General Elections. The Election Commission has fixed October 3 as nomination day for the Bagan Pinang by-election and October 11 for polling. Election Background In the 12th general election in 2008, Azman polled 6,430 votes to defeat PAS’ Ramli Ismail with a majority of 2,333 votes. PAS has called on the Election Commission to allow postal voters to vote like regular constituents during the impending Bagan Pinang by-election in Negeri Sembilan. The opposition has doubts about postal votes because they have pointed out that postal voters like the army and the police are not given a free hand in voting and usually vote for the government. Khalid Samad, Shah Alam PAS member of Parliament said Umno will pay a price for the actions of the cow-head protestors at the upcoming Bagan Pinang by-election, in Negri Sembilan where almost 20 percent of voters are Indians. He was referring to the October 30, where 50 protestors marched from the state mosque in Shah Alam to the state secretariat with a severed cow head to protest the relocation of the 150-year-old Hindu temple from Section 19 in Selangor. ![]()
