The High Court has postponed a trial in which de facto opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is charged with allegedly having sex with his former male aide last year, Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
His defence lead counsel was still ill it seems.
Lawyer Sulaiman Abdullah was not present as informed by counsel Edmund Bon to the presiding judge, Judge Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah.
Sulaiman was instead under observation at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital after citing dizzy spells.
Earlier last week the defence counsel Sulaiman Abdullah had left the court for a medical appointment at Pantai Hospital, where the evidence application was delayed then during the court session.
The judge was told that Sulaiman’s medical certificate did not state when he will be recover to attend court, but was informed instead the hospital evaluation will be ready by this week.
The judge then fixed July 15 to hear Anwar’s first application.
The second application and trial proper would also be mentioned on the same date.
Anwar’s defence team current plan now is to seek more time to prepare as and when they received the prosecutors evidence documents, which includes, CCTV footages, statements and medical reports.
The prosecution team led by Solicitor-General (II) Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden did not object to the defence requests.
Anwar after the session was quoted, “I am just asking for a few days to see what happens to my lead counsel. The prosecution’s insistence that the case go on is not only foolish but also lacks respect. And why do we need to go on with the trial by making numerous applications just to get documents. It is our right to get those documents. It is a mockery of the whole process, they know the law. This just goes to show they have a lot to hide.”
